Ford Motor Co. is continuing to transform its Henry Ford II World Center Campus by renovating the former Product Development Center in an effort to encourage more staff collaboration, including with its racing arm.

The facility will become part of its new World Headquarters complex that opened in November in Dearborn, Mich., and will be renamed World Headquarters South. Construction will begin in May, according to the automaker, and is scheduled for completion in 2029.

The renovation will provide a more open concept and increased natural lighting, as well as new amenities, like cafes, markets, wellness rooms, reflection rooms and mothers’ rooms. Ford said the new features will “mirror the modern look and feel of our World Headquarters.”

The center will accommodate 5,000 employees and have workspace for labs, vehicle testing and prototype work.

Additionally, it will be the new home of Ford Racing, which has rejoined Formula 1 after a 22-year hiatus.

“Lessons learned in the world’s most extreme races translate directly into the technology and experiences we design and engineer across our vehicle lineup,” said CEO and Chairman of Ford Land Jim Dobleske.

Also starting this year is construction of a new 3,100-space parking deck for the campus that will include EV charging stations. Several road names will also be updated to reflect Ford products, and the Experimental Vehicles Building will undergo renovation to match the new campus look.

When all is said and done, the World Headquarters complex will be 3.3 million square feet, Ford said, and accommodate 10,000 to 11,000 employees total. Ultimately, about 16,000 employees will be within a 15-minute walk of each other, which the company said will make collaboration across the campus easier.

The automaker said the renovation is part of a global effort to modernize Ford facilities. It said that by the end of 2027 more than 90% of its global office employees will work in new or renovated spaces.
